The MonaLisa Touch is a breakthrough treatment for vaginal atrophy that uses the Deka SmartXide Fractionated Dot Laser to treat the symptoms of vaginal atrophy including:
• itching, burning, dryness,
• lack of lubrication, or painful intercourse,
• vaginal laxity or looseness / loss of elasticity
• recurrent thrush, or urinary tract infections,
• mild urinary incontinence with sneezing coughing and jumping

Women of all ages experience changes to their vagina and urinary tract as they age. These symptoms are called vaginal atrophy and are due to a combination of decreasing oestrogen levels, trauma from child birth, and general age related deterioration.

These symptoms can have a negative effect on general well being, cause one to alter one’s lifestyle and in many cases place stress on intimate relationships.

The MonaLisa Touch was introduced into Australia in January 2013 and more than 4000 treatments have been performed. The feedback from the Australian doctors performing the treatments is that the MonaLisa Touch is consistently exceeding their expectations and patients report it to be life changing.
The MonaLisa Touch is a low-risk procedure that provides long-lasting improvement. It is suitable for women of all ages suffering vaginal symptoms. While it can be used in conjunction with HRT, it is suitable for women who cannot use HRT, such as breast cancer survivors.

Vaginal atrophy causes changes to the structure and function of the vagina. There is a loss of collagen within the walls of the vagina resulting in thinner and less elastic tissue. This is accompanied by a reduction in the blood supply to the protective lining of the vagina resulting in thinning, loss of lubrication and changes in the natural PH balance of the internal environment.

Currently the most common treatment for the symptoms of vaginal atrophy is intra vaginal HRT which requires on going applications of oestrogen creams or pessarys directly into the vagina. For a variety of reasons some women are not able to use these hormone treatments, or become uncomfortable with the process, or are irregular with the application and therefore get sub optimal results or discontinue the treatment.

A consultation with our female doctor will ensure that the procedure is appropriate for the patient’s symptoms. An up to date Pap smear will be required or one can be performed during the initial consult. If the patient has a history of genital herpes, prophylactic antiviral medication must be taken prior to the procedure.
Appropriate dress on the day includes cotton underwear and loose clothing (dress or skirt).

The MonaLisa Touch involves direct application of multiple small dots of laser energy to the walls of the vagina by means of a specially designed scanner and probe system. This stimulates the body’s own regenerative processes to create healthier and more hydrated cells and improves the circulation and nutrient supply to the vaginal mucosa. This has a direct effect on the integrity and elasticity of the vaginal wall and returns the internal vaginal environment to a more youthful condition.

In as little as 30 days after the treatment the regeneration of new tissue in the vaginal wall builds a naturally stronger vaginal structure and the protective mucosa recovers lost volume, hydration and elasticity.

While improvement occurs after one treatment it is recommended that three treatments a month apart are performed to gain maximum benefit. It is a quick and painless treatment.

Patients can return to normal activities immediately with no downtime. It is however recommended that patients refrain from sexual intercourse, baths, spas and swimming for five days following the procedure.

Risks and discomfort
The MonaLisa Touch is a non surgical, non hormonal alternative for the treatment of symptoms related to vaginal atrophy. It is a very safe treatment and has very few side effects or complications. Post procedure symptoms are limited and resolve quickly with some patients experiencing mild spot bleeding, or increased discharge for a day or two.
The MonaLisa Touch treatment is pain free, well tolerated and suitable for most women.

The MonaLisa Touch treatment cannot be claimed from Medicare at this stage, however, the initial consultation cost of $100 is normally nearly all refunded by Medicare.
